Fighting for Fresh Air

Author and editor Charles L. Grant has been hospitalized for many weeks, suffering from severe cardiopulmonary disease and emphysema. Like many writers, Grant and his lovely wife, editor Kathryn Ptacek, don't have health insurance and the bills are really piling up.

In response to this medical crisis, The Horror Writers Association plans to hold a benefit auction. Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub, Clive Barker and nearly 50 other authors plan to send in items to auction on eBay beginning May 23rd. If you're interested in helping this worthy cause, look for items listed by "bookwyrm55" and place a bid. A silent auction will be held June 4-6 at the HWA annual meeting in New York City, where the Bram Stoker Awards will be presented.

Donations to the Fresh Air Fund are also being accepted by snail mail and via Paypal.

Some Wishes Do Come True

Nine-year-old Ben Duskin is in remission from leukemia. The Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation presented him with the opportunity to make one request, and Ben said he really wanted to design a video game that would help kids with cancer. Eric Johnston, a senior software engineer at LucasArts, offered to help.

Ben's Game, which allows players to destroy mutated cells, has already been installed in the pediatric unit of the UCSF Children's Hospital. To download a free beta version, click here.

Do You Need a Hug?

If you live in Manhattan, Jayson Littman is giving hugs away.

The 26-year-old financial analyst recently set up a hug distribution service in Greenwich Village. On his first day in "business," Littman embraced 200 people in less than three hours. Jayson's rules are ones we should all take to heart: No dates, no numbers, no money. And no discrimination.

Seeking Advice on In-Laws for a New Book

Anyone who's been married knows that in-laws can be a joy ... or a nightmare. The book, "How to Survive Your In-Laws by Hundreds of Happy Couples Who Did" will feature the memorable stories, hard-won experiences and wisdom of married people who've learned how to forge (or avoid) relationships with their extended families.

Interested? Just e-mail MaidenFate@aol.com with the subject heading "Interview Request - In-Laws." Each interview contains 15 questions, and must be completed by May 20th. If you've already answered one of my other interview requests, feel free to participate again. Thank you!

Who Wants to Be a Superhero?

MTV and Stan Lee are looking for comic book fanatics to appear on a new reality show. The winner will have his/her superhero character developed into a comic book spin-off.

Real Life Heroes

Jim Walther fits the bill. The New York City firefighter recently crawled through thick black smoke inside a burning house to rescue a 90-year-old Queens man who'd fallen out of his wheelchair and couldn't escape the blaze. Walther placed his own oxygen mask on the elderly victim's face and pulled him to safety.
