"I thank God we have no free schools or printing, and I hope that we shall not have these for a hundred years. For learning has brought disobediences and heresy and sects into the world; and printing has divulged them and libels against the government. God keep us from both."
--Sir William Berkeley , Governor, Virginia Colony, 1671

Approximately 30,000 irreplaceable books were destroyed on Sept. 2 in a fire at the Anna Amalia Library in Germany. The entire collection of its first librarian and the sheet music archive of the library's patron, Anna Amalia (1739-1807), the duchess of Saxony-Weimar, were some of the treasures lost in the blaze. Firefighters and local residents were able to save 120,000 books, however, including a 1534 Bible owned by Martin Luther.
