Women's eNews has named Anna Zarkova its "Journalist of the Month."

The chief crime reporter at the Bulgarian daily newspaper, Trud, Zarkova has spent many years pushing for official accountability of crime and encouraging her countrywomen to fight for equal rights. For her efforts, she was repaid with violence. In 1998, a man attacked her with sulfuric acid, severely burning her face. He was never convicted of his crimes.

"Some might call continuing to do this job madness, and maybe it is. But standing up for the truth is also a duty, and I urge all Bulgarians to never give up on the truth," Zarkova said.

* A study in the journal Tobacco Control showed that smoking killed nearly 5 million people worldwide in 2000. (MSNBC)

* According to a study from researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, overweight women who take birth control pills are more likely to get pregnant than leaner women. (The Seattle Post-Intelligencer)

* A 2002 Dairy Council study found that kids will drink 18% more milk out of plastic bottles than paper cartons. The study also found that children who drank bottled milk finished more of it. (CNN.com)
