George and Germaine Briant loved each other for 83 years.
The oldest married couple in Louisiana, they were nearly inseparable from the night they met on a blind date. Germaine was engaged to someone else at the time, but knew George was the one. He also knew, and proposed to her that very night. Germaine quickly broke her engagement and married George three months later. That was in 1921.
Germaine died on Jan. 28 at the age of 101; George followed her three days later on Jan. 31 at the age of 103.
"It is the passion that is in a kiss that gives to it its sweetness; it is the affection in a kiss that sanctifies it."

David B. Richardson, who died Jan. 25 of prostate cancer at 88, is believed to be the most highly decorated correspondent in uniform during World War II.
Known for trekking behind the soldiers carrying a typewriter, a camera and a rifle, Richardson received several awards, including two Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Richardson would have received a Purple Heart for a wound near his eye, but he opted to don an eye patch and just return to combat instead.
The Scripps Howard News Service culled together Defense Department casualty reports, family interviews, obituaries and accounts in hometown newspapers and discovered a great deal about the collateral damage of the War in Iraq.
From the start of the conflict in March 2003 through November 2004, 1,256 troops had died. More than 40 percent of those soldiers were married and 429 of them had children. During that same time period, nearly 900 U.S. children lost a parent in the war. (Al's Morning Meeting)
A new Jaded Writings column has been posted. This week, I reveal my wanderlust.
"Most journalists are restless voyeurs who see the warts on the world, the imperfections in people and places. Gloom is their game, the spectacle their passion, normality their nemesis."
