"The primary activities are to salvage reusable objects from the Berkeley transfer station (dump); receive incoming recyclables; sort, upgrade and take recyclables to buyers...This is heavy and demanding physical work; salvagers lift about a ton a day. The environment is noisy, dusty and smelly. People who find the job rewarding have a treasure-hunter’s curiosity and take pleasure in helping to prevent waste. Salvagers receive a 50¢ per hour premium compared to other staff to reward the dirty work the job requires...Compensation: $11.60/hr."
